While I'm at recommending places

You wouldn't necessarily expect a bookstore cafe to offer some of the best food and drink in town, but Rahva Raamat in Viru Keskus - run by Imre Kose, one of the best chefs in Estonia - does just that. At the very least you should try their freshly squeezed orange juice. If the whole shopping mall literary setting is not your thing though, try Kolme Näoga Mees on Kuninga in the Old Town. Despite being a stone's throw from Town Hall Square and tourist magnets like Olde Hansa, it's not the kind of place just anyone walks into, so it still has a sense of intimacy about it. And they do fantastic ice cream cocktails.

Incidentally, Vertigo is also run by Imre Kose. How many restaurants does the man have?

You know what, though? Olde Hansa is really good.

I have heard several people say now that quality at Olde Hansa (i.e. the food) is dropping away to nothing so fast it's scary. I ate there recently with my brother and his flatmate and the food seemed OK to me; it was the atmosphere that was a bit lacking. Their turnover is so high these days that you feel like there's no time to soak any of it up - it feels more like a get in and get out affair. Sad.

Anukene, I had no idea Imre Kose also runs Vertigo. Well actually, now that you mention it I do recall hearing his name attached to it when it first opened. He's a great chef though, so any restaurant/cafe he has anything to do with should be great.

Duke at Olde Hansa when he was in town a couple weeks ago and he loved it, but he had no previous experience to compare it to.

Did he give any explanation as to why he completely failed to get in touch with me after I sent him a very friendly and welcoming email??! (Maybe they saw the prices at Olde Hansa and decided that inviting another person along was beyond their budget.)

He said that they were so jet-lagged when they got to Estonia that they spent most of there time in their hotel and basically made one excursion into the old town when they ate at Olde Hansa -- I WAS OUTRAGED THOUGH!!!

Hardly an excuse - he didn't even reply to the email BEFORE THEY LEFT!
